Both are awesome. The best presents are something thoughtful that shows that you considered how the gift might impact the person.
The best presents are the ones that show that someone loves you enough to be thinking of you enough to get you something that shows they care.

That doesn't matter, what matters is if they take the time to pick something they know you will love. Thought counts more than the actual gift.
Oh either can be great.....it's the thing you wouldn't buy yourself or didn't know you needed.
