I like a good mix of both. If you run out of surprises, practical gifts can still stem from thoughtfulness.
Surprises! They don't happen often, but that's what would make them so special. Aside from the fact that there was so much thought put into it.
Mix of both I think... Not really want flowers all the time but SOMETIMES IT'S WONDERFUL!!!

A big surprise because you don't know what it will be and appreciate the thought more.
The best present for Christmas is a surprise. For birthday - any of the above.
